Padrão Hurricane Florence vs Typhoon Mangkhut: What is the difference between the two?

Hurricane Florence vs Typhoon Mangkhut: What is the difference between the two?

HURRICANE Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut are wreaking havoc in different parts of the world – but what is the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon?

Two powerful storms are causing mayhem in difference regions.

At least 32 people have lost their lives in storm-related incidents in the Carolinas in the US – 25 in North Carolina, 6 in South Carolina and 1 in Virginia.

Hurricane Florence brought heavy rainfall and winds, and about 500,000 homes and businesses are still without power.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Mangkhut has killed dozens of people in the Philippines, and is now making its way across southern China.

The typhoon is the most powerful storm to hit the region in decades.

The two weather systems look almost identical from space – so why do they have different names?

What is the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon?

Typhoons and hurricane are essentially the same thing – tropical storms.

However, they have different names in different locations.

In the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific they are called hurricanes – therefore Hurricane Florence.

Meanwhile, the same powerful storm in the Northwest Pacific Ocean is called a typhoon – thereof mangkhut Typhoon.

To confuse things further, in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean the weather system is known as a cyclone.

Meteorologists use tropical cyclone as a generic term.

This means a rotating, organised system of clouds and thunderstorms, originating over tropical or subtropical waters, state the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the US.

It states: “Once a tropical cyclone reaches maximum sustained winds of 74mph (119km/h) or higher, it is then classified as a hurricane, typhoon, or tropical cyclone, depending upon where the storm originates in the world.”

They can be categorised between numbers 1 to 5 depending on their wind speed.

Once a hurricane, cyclone or typhoon is determined, the World Meteorological Organisation names it.

The UN body has a list to name tropical cyclones around the world.
