Virginia General Election 2017: How Alexandria Voted

The City of Alexandria voted overwhelmingly for Ralph Northam with all 29 precincts reporting.

By Emily Leayman (Patch Staff) - Updated Nov 7, 2017 11:14 pm ET

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Alexandria voters largely choose Democrat Ralph Northam for governor during the general election Tuesday, Nov. 7. Northam had a nearly 58 point lead over Republican Ed Gillespie with all 29 precincts reporting. Northam won the city by a higher margin than Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who had a 49 point lead in 2013.
The Associated Press called the race for Northam at 8:12 p.m. Alexandria chose the Democratic victors in three statewide races, including Justin Fairfax for lieutenant governor and Mark Herring for attorney general.
Virginia's gubernatorial race was one of the first statewide tests of voters' moods since the 2016 election of President Donald Trump. A Democratic loss would have been another blow to the party after 2016, while a Republican win could have all but guaranteed full party control in Richmond. The general election results set the stage for 2018 races, notably with Trump supporter Corey Stewart challenging Sen. Tim Kaine.
All House of Delegates seats are up for election this year, and unopposed Dels. Mark Levine (D-45) and Charniele Herring (D-46) easily won re-election. And the state made election history with the election of its first openly transgender elected state lawmaker Danica Roem, who defeated Republican Del. Bob Marshall to represent parts of Prince William and Loudoun counties in the 13th district. On top of that, Fairfax becomes the second African-American in state history to win a statewide office.
Commonwealth's Attorney Bryan Porter and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne also ran unopposed in Alexandria and were re-elected.
